GTA 6 is in development, Rockstar Games has confirmed, settling years of rumor and speculation in the fan community.

The announcement was made in February 2022, with Rockstar stating that work on the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series is not only happening, but it's actually "well underway".

For a game as highly anticipated as GTA 6, Rockstar's blog post announcement(opens in new tab) was pretty understated.

However, it was really just a formal confirmation of something everyone knew was happening anyway.

After all, GTA 6 has been rumored for years, with a report(opens in new tab) from Kotaku all the way back in April 2020 claiming that a "new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series" was in the early stages of its development.

Right now, we don't know much about GTA 6 at all, other than that it's a real game that we'll one day be able to play.

We are, for instance, still waiting for a release year and a setting but there are plenty of rumors floating around that could hint at what we should expect.

Unfortunately, we didn't find out more about GTA 6 at the Summer Game Fest 2022 showcase,

which isn't a huge surprise host given that host Geoff Keighley previously confirmed(opens in new tab) that a trailer for the new Grand Theft Auto wouldn't be making an appearance at the event.

So, while it's likely going to be a while before we get more details on Grand Theft Auto 6, GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X has at least given us some insight into how sharp the game could look on the latest generation of consoles.
