The team is forced to revisit a cold case with ties to the modern day, and the parallels between the case and the personal lives of the cops lead to some tense scenes.
The episode opens with one of the oddest cases in the show’s history. An older couple is found murdered in their bed, but the events leading up to their deaths have the team scratching their heads.
The couple had dinner, were given a bleach bath, and read a bedtime story in their final hours, which aligned perfectly with a cold case dating back two decades.
The cold case involved a boy named Daniel, who was found at a rest stop after similarly being given a bleach bath. The details surrounding the case were scarce, though, leading the police to dismiss Daniel’s claims and do little about looking into suspects.
Daniel is now an upstanding adult with a family, but his recollection of the abduction is a little too fanciful to be taken at face value.
He describes birds and flowers and “pink dust” that fell off the ceiling, and while Burgess (Marina Squerciati) believes him, she also fears that his memory could be faulty.
Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) take the lead on the case, and they can’t help but liken the trauma that Daniel experienced to the trauma that Makayla (Ramona Edith Willaims) is currently dealing with.
The duo work through their anxieties and manage to track down a suspect who was working on the building that Daniel was supposedly held captive.
They eventually discover that the man, Jim, killed Daniel’s parents, and the remains were hidden away for years.
